How to use JavaScript to detect faces and apply filters

I’ve previously written a guide on how to detect facial features using Python and I got many questions on twitter asking how to do the same using JavaScript. So today, I’m going to be answering that and we’ll add some extras: masking your face with a Spiderman filter, or the classic, dog filter. It’s been really fun to work on this project and I hope you enjoy it too.

The article will cover two main topics:

  • Face features recognition
  • Adding filters

So, here’s how to to detect facial features

Similarly to how DLib works, for JavaScript, we have a library called clmtrackr which will do the heavy work of detecting where the face is on an image, and will also identify facial features such as the nose, mouth, eyes, and more. Read More

You can now apply for your $25 iPhone ‘batterygate’ compensation

According to the website’s FAQ, “Apple will provide a cash payment of approximately $25 per eligible device.” But before getting too excited about getting money from the company, keep in mind that Apple has agreed to pay a maximum of $500 million as part of the settlement. Depending on how many people file for a claim, you may get less than $25.

It’s also worth noting you can exclude yourself from the settlement. However, as The Verge points out, the only reason to do that is if you plan to sue Apple directly about the issue. Whatever decision you make, you have until October 6th to submit a claim. At that point, you can expect payment at some point after December 4th. That’s when a judge will sign off on the settlement, provided there aren’t any appeals.  Read More

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it earns it… he who doesn’t… pays it,” Albert Einstein once said. For those who aren’t financial gurus, allow me to put this quote in layman’s terms: everyone who’s able to save up a little, and is patient enough, can get wealthy. It’s not how celebrities get rich, it’s how the millionaire next door gets born.

So how does it work?

To become this achievable millionaire next door, you don’t have to win the lottery, or have an IQ as high as Einstein’s. All you have to understand is one investment concept called compound interest, and of course make it work for you. Read More
