Why vehicle-to-grid charging could be the cheapest way to secure renewable energy

The UK electricity system is undergoing significant and rapid change. It has the world’s largest installed capacity of offshore wind, has effectively stopped generating electricity from coal, and has recorded a 20% drop in demand since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, this transition from traditional, reliable coal to weather-dependent wind and solar generation brings with it increasing challenges to match electrical supply and demand at every instant. This is where large grid-scale energy storage systems could help regulate and buffer supply and demand, and improve grid control. Read More

The cheapest Cam Link clone you can buy actually works pretty well

As The Verge’s resident live-streaming reporter, I do a lot of streaming on my own time, both because it’s fun and because I want to know a little about what it’s like for the people I cover. That’s meant I’ve gained a healthy appreciation for the various pieces of gear that make streaming possible — because streaming is the opposite of effortless. Things break constantly, and most of the time for no obvious reason. (There but for the grace of god go we, etc.) All of that said, I’ve found that upgrading my stream setup is one of the few true pleasures I have left; there’s nothing quite as satisfying as adding a new camera or microphone or chat command that might elevate a viewer’s experience. Shadow offers subscription to access a powerful gaming PC in the cloud. Specifications of PCs Shadow offers are well defined and therefore the service provides a certain level of predictability when it comes to performance, yet the actual experience depends on stability of internet connection and ping. Shadow uses Open Compute Project servers running Intel Xeon processors as well as Nvidia Quadro graphics hardware (because it needs to virtualize access to GPUs) to enable its services.  Read More
