Confirmed: The PS5 is the biggest game console in modern history

When internet detectives revealed the PlayStation 5 was going to be huge, we were extremely amused — but even their fancy Photoshops couldn’t completely prepare us for how enormous the PS5 truly is. Roughly half an hour after Sony finally revealed the next-gen console’s price and release date ($399 or $499, November 12th) the company released a full spec sheet that includes the console’s dimensions. And it’s a monster. Quick, what’s the biggest console ever made? Did you say the original 2001 Xbox, or the VCR-sized original Xbox One? Perhaps the 60GB PS3, affectionately dubbed the “Phat”? Wrong. The PS5 is bigger than all of them. According to Sony, the PS5 is approximately 390mm (15.4 inches) tall, 260mm (10.24 inches) deep and 104mm (4.09 inches) wide, making it the single biggest game console you’ve probably ever heard of. The model without the disc drive? Same story, just 12 millimeters slimmer. I plugged the numbers into CompareSizes.com to see how it stacks up to consoles that we’ve previously ridiculed for being absolute chonks: From left to right: PS3 60GB, Xbox, Xbox One, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5Visualization: CompareSizes There’s barely a comparison. The PS5 is so much bigger, you can’t even argue the 3D perspective throws off its actual size. I’m pretty sure you’d need to go back to the days of game machines with built-in CRT televisions, or computers like the Commodore 64, to get much bigger. And boy oh boy is this box bigger than the new Xbox Series X…Continue readingConfirmed: The PS5 is the biggest game console in modern history

Final Fantasy 16 confirmed for next-gen – but it’s a PS5 exclusive

There’s a new Final Fantasy game on the way for PS5 – and it’s going to be a PlayStation console exclusive. Sony boldly opened its PS5 event live stream tonight (September 16) with a trailer for Final Fantasy 16, showing off a war-ridden world plagued with chocobos, crystals, and giant flaming phoenixes. If there’s one thing Final Fantasy isn’t known for, it’s understatement – and you can see for yourself in the video below. The new instalment comes several years after the 2016 game Final Fantasy 15, making it the perfect time for a new title in the long-running fantasy franchise. It looks pretty similar to that game in terms of its real-time combat, at first glance. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn super producer Naoki Yoshida is behind the game. It’s been confirmed as a singleplayer entry by Square Enix. “The exclusive footage, comprised of both battles and cutscenes running in real time, represents but a fraction of what our team has accomplished since the start of development on this, an all-new Final Fantasy game,” Yoshida says in a blog. “In that span, the team’s size has grown from a handful of core members to a full-fledged unit that continues to polish and build upon what they have created so far, all to provide players an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay. When is out? While we haven’t yet heard a release date, the earliest it could come is late 2020 – with the PS5 expected to…Continue readingFinal Fantasy 16 confirmed for next-gen – but it’s a PS5 exclusive

The Mandalorian season 2 release date is finally confirmed by Disney Plus

The Mandalorian season 2 finally has an official release date: October 30. That’s when you’ll get your next look at Baby Yoda in the Disney Plus Star Wars show, which is undoubtedly the biggest TV event left during this year. In addition, Lucasfilm has released a new logo ahead of the second season. It shows Mando and Baby Yoda together – as they should be. Fans had largely expected to get their first look at The Mandalorian season 2 during Star Wars Celebration, which was once scheduled for this past weekend, but that event was cancelled when Covid-19 hit earlier this year.  Check out the logo and confirmation of The Mandalorian season 2 release date here: This is the day. New episodes start streaming Oct. 30 on #DisneyPlus. #TheMandalorian pic.twitter.com/8oruZ3oedxSeptember 2, 2020 In a fortunate turn of events for fans, the series finished filming before the pandemic kicked off – meaning that the release date of the show hasn’t been impacted like it has for fellow Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It’s unclear when we’ll see our first trailer for The Mandalorian season 2, then, but we expect the wait won’t be too long. Numerous reports have pointed towards appearances from big-name Star Wars characters in the show’s second season – but rather than spoil all of those, we’ll direct you to our comprehensive guide to The Mandalorian season 2 here if you want to know more. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War title confirmed, reveal coming very soon

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be the next entry in the franchise, and we can expect more information on August 26. The confirmation comes by way of an unlisted video on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel. The video was discovered by Warzone players after they’d worked on and solved a number of puzzles on this website. The site has been playing various interviews and footage from the Cold War over the last week and this, in turn, led to clues that pointed to a number of bunkers located on the Verdansk map in Call of Duty: Warzone. The culmination of all this work led to the discovery of the unlisted video with the description “Know your history or be doomed to repeat it. Verdansk. August 26”, pointing to some sort of in-game reveal in Warzone. But if you’re hoping for even a brief glimpse gameplay in the video, you’re going to have to wait for the reveal later this month. Much like the clues that led to its discovery, the video mostly contains Cold War interviews and footage. When can we expect a release? The title for the new Call of Duty game was all but confirmed by a Doritos promotion planned for October which offered players a year of double XP in ‘Black Ops Cold War.’ Treyarch had also been confirmed as the developer for the upcoming game so it was a safe bet to assume we’d be making a…Continue readingCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War title confirmed, reveal coming very soon

Xbox Series X confirmed for November launch in Japan

Unlike the Xbox One, the Xbox Series X will launch in Japan at the same time as other major markets, meaning it’ll see release this November. Microsoft confirmed the news in response to an inquiry from Japanese site Game Watch. The Xbox One came out in November 2013 in 13 countries, but Japan had to wait until September 2014 along with several other regions, despite its outsized importance to the games industry. Some countries saw their announced release dates slip with Microsoft citing localization issues; the Xbox One’s initial focus on Kinect and voice commands made it more complex to support a wide variety of languages. The Xbox One has not performed well in Japan The Xbox One has not performed well in Japan, to put it lightly. Sales figures from Media Create put the platform at around 114,000 total units sold since its launch, including the One S and One X. Microsoft has long struggled in Japan, but that’s dramatically worse than even the Xbox 360, which managed to sell about 1.65 million units by the end of 2014 and did achieve something of a cult following in the country. Speaking to Game Watch last year, Xbox head Phil Spencer said it was a mistake to launch the Xbox One later in Japan, and expressed a desire to see the Xbox platform succeed in the market. That’ll be a tall order for the Series X in a country where even the PS4 has already been outsold by the Nintendo…Continue readingXbox Series X confirmed for November launch in Japan

Microsoft’s new Xbox Series S console confirmed in leaked controller packaging

Microsoft is rumored to be unveiling its second, cheaper next-gen Xbox console this month, and it looks like it will definitely be called Xbox Series S. The Verge has obtained photos of Microsoft’s new next-gen Xbox controller in white, complete with packaging that mentions the Xbox Series S. Twitter user Zak S was able to purchase the controller today, and we’ve confirmed it’s genuine. The new controller was sold on a resale site today, and the side of the packaging notes that the controller works with both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. Microsoft has not officially unveiled an Xbox Series S yet, nor has the company even confirmed a white Xbox Series X controller. Xbox Series S on the packaging. A mysterious white Xbox Series X controller also appeared online last month, complete with the new D-pad, textured triggers, and new share button. This new leak matches the previous controller leak, and retail packaging suggests that these could be appearing in stores soon. The Xbox Series S will likely be Microsoft’s second cheaper next-gen Xbox, that’s been codenamed Lockhart. A Microsoft document, leaked back in June, shed some further light on the company’s plans for two next-gen consoles. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X devkit, codenamed “Dante,” allows game developers to enable a special Lockhart mode that has a profile of the performance that Microsoft wants to hit with this second console. The Lockhart console is expected to include 7.5GB of usable RAM, around 4 teraflops of GPU performance,…Continue readingMicrosoft’s new Xbox Series S console confirmed in leaked controller packaging

Foldable phones: all the confirmed and rumored foldable handsets

Foldable phones still aren’t mainstream devices yet, with sky-high prices ensuring none of them are huge sellers, but the phones themselves keep coming, and keep getting better, while prices are starting to come down a bit. This year so far we’ve has the relatively affordable Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, the impressive Huawei Mate Xs, and most recently the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, a phone which isn’t actually out yet but has been announced, and looks to be a big improvement on the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. These phones all follow the handful of foldable handsets we saw in 2019, so a good number of foldable phones are now available. Beyond that, there are also concept devices, which may or may not eventually become commercial products, and rumored or expected foldables that haven’t been unveiled yet, so there are likely plenty more foldables to come in the fairly near future. You’ll find details of all of these foldables below, both those that are out in the world already and those we know or suspect are in the works. So settle down, read on, and start saying goodbye to your old rigid handset, because the future is (maybe) flexible. Update: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been announced and is set to land in September, while rumors about other upcoming foldables continue to roll in. Confirmed foldable phones These are all the foldable phones that are either out now, or should be releasing soon, since either they’re in your hands…Continue readingFoldable phones: all the confirmed and rumored foldable handsets

Call of Duty 2020 dev confirmed as Treyarch, further suggesting it’s a Black Ops game

While it’s been rumored for months that the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will be a Black Ops title – specifically, Black Ops Cold War, if the Doritos promotional campaign is accurate – Activision itself has now lent some ‘official’ weight to the theory. Since 2012, the first-person shooter franchise has alternated between developers Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games in three-year cycles, but this year it’s seemingly bucking the trend and skipping Sledgehammer. Activision has confirmed in an earnings call that studios Treyarch and Raven will be working in partnership on the upcoming title, and considering that this development duo has been responsible for every Black Ops entry to date, this further cements the rumor that Black Ops Cold War will be releasing this year. During the call, the publisher pointed at the current success of its Modern Warfare and Warzone titles, then went on to state that “Activision will continue to build on its direct, digital relationship with this expanded community as it delivers the next premium release for Call of Duty, coming from Treyarch and Raven Software”. As for Raven, this development studio has been involved in many of the series’ previous titles (albeit usually on the multiplayer side of things), although it isn’t typically listed as being a co-developer. This could signify a greater focus on multiplayer than previous titles, although it’s always been a significant selling point for the franchise, with the last Black Ops title forgoing a traditional story-based single-player campaign…Continue readingCall of Duty 2020 dev confirmed as Treyarch, further suggesting it’s a Black Ops game

Xbox Series X controller release date, news and confirmed features

If you’re clamoring for more information about the Xbox Series X controller, you’ve come to the right place. Microsoft has revealed the new Xbox pad in all its glory, and we can’t wait to get our grubby mitts on it when it releases – alongside the Xbox Series X towards the end of 2020. So what exciting additions can we look forward to from Microsoft’s new controller? Well, it’s designed around accessibility first and foremost. With a slightly smaller overall footprint along with some quality of life improvements, the controller should feel familiar in the hand yet subtly different. Popularized by Microsoft’s many limited edition Xbox One controllers, the Series X pad will include a tactile texture on both the triggers, grips and bumpers, which have been rounded and reduced in size. The previously glossy accents of the original are also gone in favor of a matte finish that closely matches the console’s design. Microsoft has clearly cleaved pretty close to the design of the Xbox One controller, though – unlike Sony, which unveiled quite a drastic visual departure for its next-gen PS5 controller, named the DualSense (rather than the DualShock moniker of previous controller generations). While neither company can up-end the traditional button and trigger layout too much, it’s clear that players can expect a step up to match the beefed-up consoles coming later this year – even if we might not know the exact applications until testing out these controllers ourselves. For everything we know for sure about…Continue readingXbox Series X controller release date, news and confirmed features
