The sale comes from a combination of a discounted starting price and a $50 coupon that will be applied automatically at checkout. That brings the price down to $1,599, which is an all-time-low for the laptop that just came out in May. We gave the new 13-inch MacBook Pro a score of 87 for its colorful Retina display, much-improved Magic Keyboard and solid battery life. Buy MacBook Pro (512GB) at Amazon – $1,599 Amazon Fire tablets Valentina Palladino / Engadget Amazon’s latest Fire tablets are on sale right now — the Fire HD 8 is $70, the HD 8 Plus is $90 and the HD 10 is $110. These prices are only $10 more than the tablets’ all-time-lows, making it a decent opportunity to grab one if you can’t wait for when we think Amazon Prime Day will be in the future. We gave the Fire HD 8 a score of 81 thanks to its decent performance, strong battery life and new USB-C charging port (all of the new Fire tablets have this, finally). 2020 iPad Pro deals finally available with rare discounts this weekend

You don’t see 2020 iPad Pro deals every day, which is why Amazon’s latest $50 discounts are all the more special. We’re seeing these offers hitting silver versions of the 2020 11-inch and 12-inch iPad Pro this weekend, with every configuration on sale apart from the 512GB builds. These iPad Pro deals are particularly impressive given the fact that they’re actually dropping the price down to the cheapest it’s been so far, returning to costs we’ve only seen a couple of times throughout the year.  If $50 doesn’t seem like much to save on these high end tablets, it’s worth noting that we rarely see discounts on Apple’s latest releases. With iPad Air pre-orders coming soon, though, it’s likely September announcements have pushed these prices down this weekend.  The cheapest iPad Pro deal on offer right now is the 12.9-inch model with 128GB of storage. Sitting at $949 thanks to that $50 discount, this is the only way to get current-gen power for under $1,000. Plus, that smaller storage offering isn’t so difficult to manage if you’re relying on iCloud for most of your files – we’d just watch out for bigger apps like Adobe.  If you don’t want to be worrying about your storage, this weekend’s iPad Pro deals are extending all the way up the range, so there are plenty more discounts to take advantage of. That’s all the way up to this 1TB 12.9-inch iPad Pro available for $1,449. Plus, if you don’t need that larger display,…Continue reading2020 iPad Pro deals finally available with rare discounts this weekend

The best Xbox One prices, bundles, sales and deals for September 2020

Our best Xbox One deals and sales roundup is here to help you score a decent price on the still excellent, but fast disappearing, console from Microsoft. Sure, it’s soon to be a ‘classic’ console but don’t discount it – not least because deals start at just $249 this week – a full $50 cheaper than the newly announced Xbox Series S price. Be warned though – with the recent announcement of the discontinuation of the Xbox One X and One S All-Digital edition, this could be your last chance to score an Xbox deal before the new ones arrive in November. As you’d imagine, stock is really thin on the ground right now, even on the standard Xbox One S which normally enjoys a ubiquitous lineup of bundle deals. Our advice right now is to jump on the remaining stock while you still can and don’t get too caught up in looking for a bundle as it’s often cheaper to pick up a standalone console plus your games and accessories separately. Better still, if you can opt to wait until November for a console, we highly recommend considering a new Xbox Series X pre-order – which are available later this month. We’ve still rounded up the lowest prices for the bundles, however, which you’ll find just below along with all the rest of the best Xbox One deals this week. Can’t decide which console is best for you? We’ll also run through the differences between the consoles before showing…Continue readingThe best Xbox One prices, bundles, sales and deals for September 2020

SmartNews’ Kaisei Hamamoto on how the app deals with media polarization – TechCrunch

Six years ago, SmartNews took on a major challenge. After launching in Japan in 2012, the news discovery app decided that its first international market would be the United States. During Disrupt, co-founder Kaisei Hamamoto talked about how SmartNews adapts its app for two very different markets. Hamamoto, who is also chief operating officer and chief engineer of the startup, which hit unicorn status last year, also dove into how the company deals with media polarization, especially in the United States. At Disrupt, SmartNews announced a roster of major new features for the U.S. version of the app, including sections dedicated to voting information and articles related to local and national elections. Hamamoto said the SmartNews’ goal is to make the app a “one-stop solution for users’ participation in the election process.” The media landscape has changed a lot since SmartNews was founded in 2012. In the U.S., SmartNews is tackling the same issues as many journalists are: increasing polarization, especially along political lines, and monetization (SmartNews currently has more than 3,000 publishing partners around the world and splits ad revenue with them). And, of course, it’s up against a host of new competitors, including Apple News and Google News. While many Japanese startups focus on other Asian markets when expanding internationally, SmartNews decided to enter the United States because it is home to some of the most influential media companies in the world. On the engineering side, Hamamoto said the company also wanted to tap into the country’s AI…Continue readingSmartNews’ Kaisei Hamamoto on how the app deals with media polarization – TechCrunch

Shady Contracts, Raw Deals: Inside the Industry of Managing Video Game Stars

“I don’t think the work we do falls under the purview of the act, but that act is over 40 years old at this point and really designed to protect talent from predatory practices,” says Swartz. “Regardless, we are quite confident that we do not fall into that category. We are extremely, extremely professional and we’ll be out of business very quickly if we try to take advantage of talent.” One of the only true agencies endemic to this space is Evolved, run by Ryan Morrison, who is also a founding partner of the law firm Morrison Rothman. California’s labor commissioner has vetted Evolved’s contracts, though at one point the firm represented 70 percent of players in the Overwatch League, creating potential conflicts of interests. (Morrisson says his “heart strings got pulled.”). Now he represents a fifth of the league. In a Twitlonger posted on June 23, a former employee of Morrison’s law firms named Ma’idah Lashani accused Morrison of conflicts of interest and sexual harassment, and said that he made inappropriate remarks about a transgender staff member. Morrison Rothman contracted a neutral law firm to investigate the allegations, and in July, announced it had found “no evidence” of sexual misconduct or inappropriate relationships with team owners. “While Mr. Morrison has made mistakes in the past, he has taken and will continue taking considerable steps and actions to improve,” the firm wrote. Lashani says she declined to speak with the investigator because the investigator would not sign a letter ensuring…Continue readingShady Contracts, Raw Deals: Inside the Industry of Managing Video Game Stars

The best cheap headphone deals and sales for September 2020

Our cheap headphone deals roundup will not only get you a great price on your next pair of cans, but give you plenty of options no matter what type you’re looking for. Not only are we expert deals hunters here at TechRadar, but we’ve also reviewed all the best headphones from Apple, Beats, Jabra, Sennhseiser, Sony and many more, so you can be sure you’re getting top advice here. We cover all the best headphones released, including over-ear headphones, noise-canceling headphones, and wireless headphones, so there’s plenty on offer. Even still, readers often ask us whether they should spend a little extra for a branded pair of headphones or simply go for a set of no-name buds you often find at department stores. The answer is – you tend to get what you pay for. Those $5 / £5 buds can look pretty tempting, but there’s often a false economy at play with cheap tech. With poor audio and chintzy build quality, you’ll often find yourself going through multiple pairs in fairly short order. Subsequently, we always recommend going for one of the more known brands if your wallet will allow. Luckily, you’ll find some pretty low-cost headphone deals here so you won’t have to break the bank to find a pair that should last. Prices start at around $20 / £20 on our list this week and what’s more, most of these headphones have been impartially reviewed by us, so you know what you’re getting here. It’s with that…Continue readingThe best cheap headphone deals and sales for September 2020

Voxi and Three are competing to offer the market’s best SIM only deals

The SIM only market is full of great offers to choose from right now. And despite all of the impressive options, two networks stand tall above the rest right now, especially for those powering through data. If you’ve got a bit more cash to spare, then Three looks like the place to be. It has been offering unlimited data for just £18 a month for a while now. That puts it way below most other unlimited plans and is probably the best overall value SIM around. If that feels a little bit on the pricey side, Voxi has stepped up to supply a much more affordable SIM. It provides 12GB of data for just £10 a month and throws in the special feature of completely unlimited use of social media. WhatsApp, Facebook and more – none of these apps will eat into your data. Whichever plan sounds more enticing, you can find out more about these SIM only deals below. Three’s SIM only deals: SIM only plan from Three | 12-month contract | All-you-can-eat data | Unlimited calls and texts | £18 per monthThree has been running this plan for a while now, offering unlimited data at a price far below the competition.
