Researchers become their own lab rats with DIY coronavirus vaccine

Vaccine trials have had a weird week. First, there was the exhilarating kickoff of two massive clinical trials for vaccines created by Moderna and Pfizer. Each company is hoping to recruit 30,000 volunteers to test whether its vaccine is effective and safe. This is normal.

What’s not normal is a bunch of researchers in Boston who have decided to test a DIY coronavirus vaccine on themselves. At least 20 people have mixed together the vaccine and sprayed it up their noses as part of what they’re calling the Rapid Deployment Vaccine Collaborative (Radvac), according to a truly wild MIT Technology Review story from editor Antonio Regalado. A Wisconsin City Experiments With a Faster, DIY Covid-19 Test

Each morning at 7, Brian Wolf, the fire chief of Racine, Wisconsin, arrives for work in a neglected corner of a building called the City Hall Annex. A stately, Depression-era brick structure on a not-so-stately stretch of parking lots and auto glass shops, the space once held the workshops of a vocational college. Later, it became home to the city’s boxing club—a sign still hangs in the room that held the old ring. More recently, the space was used for storage. “It’s basically a warehouse,” Wolf says. But a few weeks ago, the Annex’s ancillary purpose became an asset. Old items were cleared out, the walls and floors scrubbed down, and rooms stocked with an array of lab tools and boxes of test tubes and pipettes. The result is perhaps the world’s most unassuming Covid-19 testing lab, where Wolf now presides over his fire crew as pipetter-in-chief. Read More

Manticore will pay DIY game creators $3 per daily player

Manticore Games has unveiled a pilot version of the monetization process for its Core platform, a do-it-yourself game construction set that folks use to create their own games. The company said it will pay these DIY creators $3 per daily gamer during its testing period.

The Core platform is a free platform for game development and a community for player-creators. The company will make more than $1 million available during the pilot program for the monetization.

Manticore wants to disrupt creativity and game making in the same way that YouTube revolutionized video creation and Instagram forever changed photo sharing, said Manticore CEO Frederic Descamps in an interview with GamesBeat. He wants people to build businesses and make a living through the games they create on Core, which requires little or no coding. Manticore announced in September that it had raised $30 million in funding to build out Core. Read More

Apple now selling DIY SSD upgrade kits for the Mac Pro

Apple will begin selling an SSD kit for the Mac Pro that allows buyers to add more storage to the high-end desktop computer. The kit, which Apple tells The Verge should be available later today, includes options for up to 8TB of storage. That storage will replace the machine’s existing SSD, so this kit is really designed for buyers who originally configured the Mac Pro with a smaller SSD option (it can go as low as 256GB), rather than people who already picked a larger SSD and still want to add more capacity.
