How studying our reaction to coronavirus can help us fight climate change

Climate change and COVID-19 are the two most significant crises faced by the modern world – and widespread behavior change is essential to cope with both. This means that official messaging by the government and other authorities is critical. To succeed, leaders need to communicate the severe threat effectively and elicit high levels of public compliance, without causing undue panic.

But the extent to which people comply depends on their psychological filters when receiving the messages – as the coronavirus pandemic has shown. Read More

‘The Fight’ doc is an invigorating reminder of the battle for freedom

We are in the middle of a war.

Not a specific war and not even a specific “we” — for most of its history, humanity has been fighting with or for something. It is a byproduct of civilization’s very existence. We fight against each other, on behalf of each other, and then we gather ourselves in victory or defeat, summoning strength for the next one.

Magnolia Pictures’ The Fight centers on four major civil rights cases, but also on this constant battle and the American Civil Liberties Union’s decision to take up its mantle — no matter who it has to defend. Read More

AMD’s first 7nm Ryzen 4000 desktop chips bring the fight to Intel

AMD is beginning to bring its latest 7nm Ryzen 4000 chips based on its Zen 2 architecture to desktops today, following a successful rollout of the laptop version of those processors earlier this year.

AMD is starting with chips for consumer-focused prebuilt systems by OEMs, which means customers looking to use the new 4000-series chips in their own custom-built rigs will still have to wait a bit. It also means that it’ll be tougher to compare the new lineup to Intel’s own 10th Gen chips, which it boasts as being “the world’s fastest gaming processor.” Read More

Google will ban coronavirus conspiracy ads to fight misinformation

Google is amping up its fight against coronavirus—related misinformation by banning ads that “[contradict] authoritative scientific consensus” about the pandemic. That means websites and apps can no longer make money from running advertisements promoting debunked conspiracy theories about COVID-19. Those include claims that the virus was created in a Chinese lab, that the pandemic is a hoax and that Bill Gates was behind it.

According to Bloomberg, Google will start enforcing the new rule next month. And in addition to blocking advertisers from creating new ads, it will use human and machine reviewers to find and take action against publishers and advertisers who break the rule. It will also ban those who repeatedly violate its new policy from using its ad platform. As a Google spokesperson explained, the new rule expands the company’s policy against harmful health claims, such as miracle health cures and things that promote anti—vaccination ideas, on the internet: Read More

Llamas—Yes, Llamas—Could Help Us Fight Covid-19

Millions of years ago, some unknown common ancestor of today’s llamas, camels, and alpacas underwent an unusual genetic mutation. This evolutionary happenstance gave llamas and their kin a strange type of antibody that no other mammals have—which, surprisingly, could end up aiding in the fight against Covid-19. This Monday, in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, researchers from the Rosalind Franklin Institute and the University of Oxford reported the discovery of two llama antibodies, also called “nanobodies,” that could prevent the virus that causes Covid-19 from infecting human cells. Seth Meyers lists all the ways the U.S. is losing the fight against coronavirus

Several months ago, commentators and politicians were suggesting grandparents should die for the sake of the economy. Now, they’re offering up the kids.

President Donald Trump has been bleating about reopening schools despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, pointing to other countries that have done so as his lackeys dutifully applaud. However, as Late Night host Seth Meyers pointed out, “that’s because [those countries] suppressed their outbreak, you sadistic sack of laundry.” Read More

Uber Moves Stealthily to Gain Allies in a Fight With Cities

In February, the outreach director for an organization called Communities Against Rider Surveillance wrote to Evan Greer. CARS wanted to know if Fight for the Future, a nonprofit digital-rights advocacy group where Greer is the deputy director, would join, and allow itself to be listed as a member of the newly formed coalition.

“CARS is a new coalition working to raise awareness of a dangerous technology called Mobility Data Specification,” the email from outreach director Rich Dunn read. “In the wrong hands, the information collected by MDS poses grave privacy and safety risks.” Read More

Microsoft’s new Teams features fight video conferencing fatigue

Despite recent pressure from the White House, schools and businesses across the country are unlikely to resume in-person functions for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But going “online-only” has posed challenges of its own. However, Microsoft Team’s brand new slew of updates and features seek to address some of those problems and make this new era of physical isolation just a little less exhausting.

Microsoft

Microsoft hopes to help attendees of online meetings feel more connected to everyone else on the call using AI-driven processes. For example, Together Mode is designed to combat Zoom Fatigue by leveraging segmentation technology to set the call participants on a shared background “making it feel like you’re sitting in the same room with everyone else in the meeting or class,” according to a Wednesday press release. Doing so reportedly helps people focus on the nonverbal cues of the other folks on the call. That feature is expected to roll out next month. Conversely, Microsoft is also releasing Dynamic View which gives call moderators more control over how shared content is displayed during a meeting by automatically optimizing the featured content and participants. For example if Bill from Accounting has the latest quarter’s sales numbers the call mod can push his spreadsheet and his video feed to the forefront of the meeting. Read More
