Social Capital Hedosophia just filed for its fourth SPAC, says new report – TechCrunch

According to a new report in Bloomberg, Social Capital Hedosophia has filed plans confidentially with the SEC to raise $500 million for its newest blank-check company. It will be the fourth special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, to be raised by the outfit, which is headed up by Chamath Palihapitiya and his longtime investment partner, Ian Osborne. Astonishingly, dozens more may be in the works. On the “All-In Podcast,” co-hosted by Palihapitiya, he revealed recently that has reserved the symbols from “IPOA” to “IPOZ” on the New York Stock Exchange. He also said he has $100 million of his own involved in each deal to demonstrate his alignment with potential investors. What’s the play? In the podcast, Palihapitiya pointed to the Federal Reserve’s economic and interest rate forecasts and its plans to keep interest rates at zero for years to come. “I mean, quite honestly,” Palihapitiya said, “there’s no path to any near-term inflation of any kind whatsoever.” It’s why he thinks investors are going to “get paid to be long [on] equities, because your risk-free rate is zero and will soon be negative. And what are you supposed to do if you’re an asset manager?” Here’s how he framed it: “Let’s say you’re the California pension system, you have hundreds of billions of dollars, and you need to generate five or 6% a year to make sure that your pension isn’t insolvent, and the government is paying you zero. When everybody is in that situation, you’re overwhelmingly long equities…Continue readingSocial Capital Hedosophia just filed for its fourth SPAC, says new report – TechCrunch

The fourth generation of AI is here, and it’s called ‘Artificial Intuition’

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most powerful technologies ever developed, but it’s not nearly as new as you might think. In fact, it’s undergone several evolutions since its inception in the 1950s. The first generation of AI was ‘descriptive analytics,’ which answers the question, “What happened?” The second, ‘diagnostic analytics,’ addresses, “Why did it happen?” The third and current generation is ‘predictive analytics,’ which answers the question, “Based on what has already happened, what could happen in the future?” While predictive analytics can be very helpful and save time for data scientists, it is still fully dependent on historic data. Data scientists are therefore left helpless when faced with new, unknown scenarios. In order to have true “artificial intelligence,” we need machines that can “think” on their own, especially when faced with an unfamiliar situation. We need AI that can not just analyze the data it is shown, but express a “gut feeling” when something doesn’t add up. In short, we need AI that can mimic human intuition. Thankfully, we have it. What is Artificial Intuition? The fourth generation of AI is ‘artificial intuition,’ which enables computers to identify threats and opportunities without being told what to look for, just as human intuition allows us to make decisions without specifically being instructed on how to do so.  It’s similar to a seasoned detective who can enter a crime scene and know right away that something doesn’t seem right, or an experienced investor who can spot a coming trend before…Continue readingThe fourth generation of AI is here, and it’s called ‘Artificial Intuition’

Tesla turns a profit for the fourth quarter in a row — a first for the company

Tesla turned a profit of $104 million in the second quarter of 2020 despite shutting down its electric vehicle factory in Fremont, California, for roughly seven weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, Tesla has now been profitable for four straight quarters for the first time in company history — an elusive benchmark the company has long sought. But perhaps more importantly, Tesla says it has a “site selected” for its next Gigafactory in the US. The company is on track to receive several tax incentive packages from local authorities in Austin, Texas, though it has been in talks with Tulsa, Oklahoma. Wherever the factory lands, Tesla will use it to build the Cybertruck and more Model Y SUVs. “The next US Gigafactory site has been selected and preparations are underway,” the company says in its earnings statement. Tesla kept its finances in the black by selling 90,650 vehicles this past quarter even with that factory shutdown — an increase over its first quarter pace of 88,000 cars delivered but still below the company’s record of 112,000 in the fourth quarter of 2019. This helped the company generate $6 billion in revenue, buoyed by $370 million in energy storage sales and $487 million in services revenue. Elon Musk has promised that his company will deliver 500,000 vehicles by the end of 2020, and the company maintains that is still possible. Tesla says it’s installing “additional machinery at the Fremont Factory, which is expected to increase total Model 3…Continue readingTesla turns a profit for the fourth quarter in a row — a first for the company

How to watch Fourth of July fireworks at home

The Fourth of July isn’t canceled, but it sure does feel like it.  With cities all over the U.S. holding off on any huge celebrations as the coronavirus outbreak resurges, many sanctioned fireworks displays are going dark. Short of setting off a fireworks show in your backyard or from your front stoop, your phone or computer (or VR headset) can dazzle you with the sights and sounds that the pandemic very unpatriotically took from us. Whether it’s an augmented reality app adding a layer of exploding color to your living room or opening the Snapchat app, the Independence Day spirit isn’t gone. It’s just digital this year. Filter it Snapchat is offering special Fourth of July lenses on the disappearing messaging platform this weekend. Your background will be popping with red, white, and blue. Fireworks everywhere. Snapchat copycat apps like Instagram and Facebook also usually celebrate with festive, thematic add-ons in Stories, so it’s easy enough to make your next post look like you were there. Augmented Reality fireworks come to you Freedom Fire  The Freedom Fire AR app for Android and iOS devices brings the fireworks wherever you are. Open the app, point where you want to see a show, and select one of the fireworks options like “Purple Rain” or something more 1776 with Founding Fathers and American flags lighting up the sky. Total AR Download this free smartphone app and watch a show on July 4 just like you planned. The app will be streaming the grand…Continue readingHow to watch Fourth of July fireworks at home
