Games of the Generation: Stardew Valley is a welcome break from the chaos of the world

Games of the Generation

As we approach the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, TechRadar is looking back at the games that made this generation great. This week’s entry? Stardew Valley.

Have you ever just wanted to leave your busy city life behind and move to a small, country town? No more Starbucks queues. No being sardined onto the subway. Just you, the clean country air and locals who don’t wither when you accidentally make eye contact.

It’s a dream typically reserved for Hallmark films, dripping in cliché and usually fronted by some city slicker who learns to love their hometown roots. But somehow Eric Barone’s Stardew Valley pulls it off. Read More

Google claims its new TPUs are 2.7 times faster than the previous generation

Google’s fourth-generation tensor processing units (TPUs), the existence of which weren’t publicly revealed until today, can complete AI and machine learning training workloads in close-to-record wall clock time. That’s according to the latest set of metrics released by MLPerf, the consortium of over 70 companies and academic institutions behind the MLPerf suite for AI performance benchmarking. It shows clusters of fourth-gen TPUs surpassing the capabilities of third-generation TPUs — and even those of Nvidia’s recently released A100 — on object detection, image classification, natural language processing, machine translation, and recommendation benchmarks. Games of the Generation: Inside is one of the best platformers of the modern age – and scary as hell

Games of the Generation

As we approach the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, TechRadar is looking back at the games that made this generation great. This week’s entry? Multi-platform sci-fi horror marvel Inside.

You’ll never forget Inside – even if you may want to forget its ending.

The indie-platform puzzler leaves a lasting impression on anyone who plays it, packing in more surprises, shocks and inventiveness in its short three-or-so hour runtime than many games manage in 20 times that amount.  Read More

Games of the Generation: No Man’s Sky does exploration in the best possible way

Games of the Generation

As we approach the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, TechRadar is looking back at the games that made this generation great. This week’s entry? No Man’s Sky (2016).

Before No Man’s Sky was released in 2016, I had its reveal poster up on my wall, but when it came out to stark criticism, I took that poster down, likely replacing it with yet another classic Bond poster or a map of a loved place. The fact I’m now arguing that No Man’s Sky is the best game of the console generation should testify to just how affecting it is. Read More

Investing in the hidden generation – TechCrunch

Ilse Calderon is an investor at OVO Fund where she specializes in pre-seed investments across capital-efficient markets. Prior to OVO, Ilse spent a year at Silicon Valley Bank rotating across consumer and software teams.

While it’s no secret Hispanics represent unparalleled growth opportunities for the U.S. economy, most startups don’t realize Hispanic youth means an abundance of prime spending years (translation: dollars for businesses). The average age of a Hispanic living in the U.S. is 28. Meanwhile, the average age of their white counterpart is 42. Nearly one in every five people in the U.S. identifies as Hispanic.

Those few companies that do notice Hispanics and their massive purchasing power (~$1.5 trillion) tend to be legacy companies doing a subpar job at capturing the Hispanic consumer. Furthermore, they don’t target the most valuable member of the Hispanic community — what I call, the “Hypercultural Latinx.” They are where tons of unspent dollars lie.  Read More

Games of the Generation: God of War is a heartwarming tale of father and son for the ages

Games of the Generation

As we approach the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, TechRadar is looking back at the games that made this generation great. This week’s entry? God of War (2018).

The God of War series has spanned three generations of PlayStation consoles, with a total of eight entries in the series since the first game’s release back in 2005. So, you would think think that there’s not a whole lot that Sony could do to shake up the veteran series’ formula – but you would be wrong. Read More

Games of the Generation: The super-heroic choreographed chaos of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4

Games of the Generation

As we approach the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, TechRadar is looking back at the games that made this generation great. This week’s entry? Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4.

Superheroes make it all look so easy. Stopping a train from speeding off an unfinished track? No problem. Defusing a bomb with seconds to spare? Piece of cake. Saving the universe from an intergalactic menace hell bent on wiping out half of all life out there? Well, maybe that was a little tougher… Read More

‘GTA V’ brings transphobia to the next console generation

“It just reinforces this idea that you can always tell who’s trans and who’s not, and that trans women will always be that slightly bit masculine,” Dr. Colliver said. “It has all of these stereotypes. They talk to real-life problems, but they don’t do it in a way that tackles problems. They do it in a way that just reinforces that trans people are somehow less than everyone else.”

One scene that stands out in Dr. Colliver’s research is the Psycho storyline from 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The Psycho is the name of a male character who attempts to assassinate the members of a popular rock band, Love Fist, by dressing as a woman and bringing a pistol to their signing event. Read More
