How to enjoy the magic of ‘Hamilton’ without Disney+

Hamilton is here for Disney+ subscribers.

Thanks to the COViD-19 pandemic, Broadway will remain shut down through at least the beginning of 2021. But theater fans who subscribe to Disney+ received a gift on Friday in the form of a filmed version of Hamilton from 2016, featuring the original cast.

It’s great, and really a top reason to be a Disney+ subscriber at this point. In the more than five years since Hamilton premiered, the only ways to experience the show have been the Original Cast Recording or nabbing a ticket – not cheap, and not always easy – for the live show. So this movie brings the show to a whole new audience. Read More

The unexpectedly heartbreaking song is one of the musical’s most lauded numbers — which is saying a lot considering the entire production won near universal critical and audience acclaim. Streaming this week: ‘Hamilton’ on Disney Plus, ‘I’ll Be Gone in The Dark,’ on HBO, and ‘Warrior Nun’ on Netflix

As I put together this latest list of what’s new on streaming this week, I realized a theme running through the selections: bad-ass women. There’s a documentary about crime-solving writer Michelle McNamara, a series based on a manga comic about a warrior nun (yes, really!), and of course the Schuyler sisters, Angelica and Eliza, from Hamilton.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (HBO, June 28th)

This six-part documentary series follows the remarkable story of the late writer Michelle McNamara and her investigation into The Golden State Killer, who terrorized California for years in the mid- 1970s and 1980s. Vulture calls it “a tough, ultimately inspirational work about how life kicks the shit out of you and you just have to get through it somehow, coping with sadness and regret and PTSD because you don’t have a choice.” Based on McNamara’s book, which was unfinished at the time of her death (her widower, the comedian Patton Oswalt, helped bring the work to completion), I’ll Be Gone in the Dark rightly focuses not on the killer himself but on McNamara’s determination to bring him to justice. 7 ways to prepare for Hamilton on Disney Plus

Hamilton, the biggest theater phenomenon of the last decade, will become one of the biggest streaming releases of all time when it lands on Disney Plus next weekend.

Hamilton has become an iconic piece of theater, and this is the first time you’ll be able to experience outside of that environment. What Disney Plus is offering is a live recording of the play featuring the original 2015 cast.

Although Disney hasn’t confirmed this was a reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, this will give many of us around the world something else to focus on in this turbulent time. Read More
