Live PlayStation 5 photos reveal a truly giant console

Sony’s PlayStation 5 hasn’t really appeared in live photos, making it difficult to gauge the size of the console. However, the game console has finally made a real-world appearance in a filing at Taiwan’s NCC (via The Verge) — and it’s clear the PS5 isn’t meant for small cabinets. While Sony hasn’t been shy about mentioning the PS5’s 15.4-inch length (or height), 10.2-inch depth and 4.1-inch thickness, the NCC’s photos put those dimensions into context. You’ll have to make room for this beast, whether you’re buying the Digital Edition or the disc-based model. As we pointed out in our specs comparison, this should be the largest console to date. It’s much larger overall than the Xbox Series X (if not as thick), and still bigger than legendary behemoths like the original PlayStation 3, the first Xbox, and the Xbox One. Sony also hasn’t included the stand or the “largest projection” of the PS5’s body into its figures. Source linkContinue readingLive PlayStation 5 photos reveal a truly giant console

PlayStation leads in TV ad impressions, but Square Enix is close behind

Gaming industry TV ad impressions saw an 87.71% increase from mid-August to mid-September, compared to the previous 30-day period. From August 16 through September 15, 12 gaming brands aired 49 spots over 6,500 times, resulting in 1.5 billion impressions. Sports, particularly NBA playoff games, were a large driver of impressions for the industry overall, and three brands dominated this time around: PlayStation, Square Enix, and Nintendo. GamesBeat has partnered with iSpot.tv, the always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company, to bring you a monthly report on TV advertising by the gaming industry. These are the ads, and by extension the games, that game marketers have been putting major muscle behind. Below are the top five most-seen gaming industry TV advertisers from the period measured. Once again, PlayStation takes first place — this time thanks to 420.6 million TV ad impressions generated by four spots that ran over 1,200 times. Its most-seen commercial (252.8 million impressions) was “Time to Assemble,” promoting Marvel’s Avengers. ESPN, FX, and Adult Swim were three of the networks with the highest impression counts, while top programming included NBA playoffs, SportsCenter, and the first week of NFL games. Second place goes to Square Enix, which aired two spots, both for Marvel’s Avengers, over 1,200 times, resulting in 375.3 million TV ad impressions. “Time to Assemble” was the most-watched commercial (311.3 million impressions), and it’s worth noting this spot is almost identical to PlayStation’s top ad, except without the PlayStation-specific branding. The NBA , SportsCenter, and college football…Continue readingPlayStation leads in TV ad impressions, but Square Enix is close behind

We talk about all of that and more on this week’s episode of the GamesBeat Decides podcast. Source linkContinue readingGamesBeat Decides 164: The PlayStation 5 Showcase and preorder mess

Sony teases next God of War for PlayStation 5

Sony teased the next God of War today. The short trailer with no video gameplay starts with the voice of Kratos, with a God of War logo that shows a number of runes on it. Kratos says, “The time grows near. … You must prepare yourself.” Then a sign appears saying “Ragnarök is coming,” with a logo from Sony Santa Monica. And that’s all we get for now. God of War was one of the top-selling games on the PlayStation 4 when it debuted in April 2018. Made by a team of 300 over five years at Sony Santa Monica, the title beat out other hits like Red Dead Redemption 2 (made with a team of as many as 2,000 people over seven years) at The Game Awards and many others awards contests for Game of the Year. As of May 2019, the God of War franchise has sold more than 32 million copies. Sony closed its PlayStation 5 Showcase virtual event with the trailer. We couldn’t hear anything, but we know that fans all over the world were howling. Source linkContinue readingSony teases next God of War for PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 pre-orders appear at retailers like Walmart and Target

If you’ve seen enough and you’re ready to put money down on Sony’s new-generation console, then the time is now. We don’t know what the supply situation will be like for the PS5, but now that the price has been announced ($500 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, $400 without), and despite Sony’s initial statement that pre-orders will start tomorrow, retailers are lining up to take your money. Posts on social media have indicated GameStop locations are doing in-person pre-orders, albeit with very limited availability, while online a couple of retailers have started to offer the console. Pre-orders were briefly available on Walmart.com earlier but now appear to be sold out, and as of this writing the $500 console is available on Target’s website, but that will probably change soon. Welcome to the next generation. Image: Sony By Dylan HaasMashable Shopping2020-09-16 23:22:56 UTC UPDATE: Sept. 16, 2020, 7:31 p.m. EDT Since publishing this story, the PS5 consoles are already listed as “out of stock” at Walmart. Don’t fret: We suspect there are more to come. Try refreshing the pages. We’ll keep updating this story as we spot more availability. TL;DR: Gaming’s next generation is just about here.  Sony’s PlayStation 5 finally has a release date and a price: Both the regular and digital editions of the PS5 will launch on Nov. 12 in the U.S., and will retail at $499 and $399, respectively. The digital edition of the console has the same internal components as the regular version, but gets rid of the disc drive for an all-digital experience (and it’s $100 cheaper). When the PlayStation 5 releases on Nov. 12, you’ll be able to dig into a bunch of highly anticipated launch titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, and more.  During the press conference that revealed this news, Sony also announced some exciting plans for the PlayStation 5’s future, including the release of Final Fantasy XVI, Hogwarts Legacy, and the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Also announced was the PlayStation Plus Collection, an Xbox-Game-Pass-style service that will allow PlayStation Plus subscribers to download and play a library of PlayStation 4 classics…Continue readingPlayStation 5 preorders are now live at Walmart

PlayStation 5’s Demon’s Souls is not coming to PC (update)

Update at 3:40 p.m. Pacific time: Demon’s Souls is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Sony pulled the trailer and said that the disclaimer was human error. So don’t expect to get the game on PC or Xbox — or, at least, not any time soon. Here’s the original story: Sony wants to get the PlayStation 5 off to a strong launch, and it’s turning to a reliable partner to make that happen. Bluepoint Games, a developer with close ties to Sony, is remaking beloved cult classic Demon’s Souls. And Sony Interactive Entertainment showed more of that game in action as part of its PS5 Showcase event today. But you won’t need a PlayStation 5 to enjoy Bluepoint’s work. Demon’s Souls is also coming to PC, according to its trailer … which later got pulled. It’s also only console exclusive to PlayStation 5 for a limited time. Demon’s Souls was originally a PlayStation 3 game from 2009. Its infamy has only grown as more fans discover the Souls games from developer From Software. Dark Souls was From’s breakout hit when it debuted in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since Dark Souls, From has grown a huge following. But many of those gamers have found it difficult to return to Demon’s Souls — especially because of its online features that rely on other human players. Bluepoint’s remake, however, will give fans of Dark Souls and Bloodbourne a chance to experience the first Souls game under more ideal scenarios. While this is one…Continue readingPlayStation 5’s Demon’s Souls is not coming to PC (update)
