Applied Materials pledges 100% renewable energy sourcing in U.S. by 2022, worldwide by 2030

To reduce the environmental impact of its operations, semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials set a goal of hitting 100% renewable energy sourcing in the U.S. by 2022 and worldwide by 2030.

Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said the Santa Clara, California-based company will also hit 50% reduction in certain carbon emissions by 2030. Applied Materials is the world’s largest maker of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Dickerson made the remarks at the outset of the online-only Semicon West event, a chip equipment industry trade show normally held in Silicon Valley. Read More


Facebook used 86 percent renewable energy in 2019

Facebook says its Menlo Park headquarters is 100 percent supported by renewable energy, and it diverts 90 percent of its waste away from landfills through recycling and composting. Four of Facebook’s US data center buildings earned LEED Gold certification, and one building in Sweden earned LEED Platinum certification, the highest rating possible.

In the sustainability report, Facebook claims it’s committed to giving back to the communities where its facilities are located. For instance, it plans to recover heat generated by its servers in Odense, Denmark, and donate it to a local district heating company. Facebook hopes to provide 100,000 MWh of energy annually. That’s enough to warm 6,900 homes in the nearby city, and it will help Odense phase out of coal by mid-2022. Read More

When Nicole Poindexter left the energy efficiency focused startup, Opower a few months after the company’s public offering, she wasn’t sure what would come next.

At the time, in 2014, the renewable energy movement in the US still faced considerable opposition. But what Poindexter did see was an opportunity to bring the benefits of renewable energy to Africa.

“What does it take to have 100 percent renewables on the grid in the US at the time was not a solvable problem,” Poindexter said. “I looked to Africa and I’d heard that there weren’t many grid assets [so] maybe I could try this idea out there. As I was doing market research, I learned what life was like without electricity and I was like.. that’s not acceptable and I can do something about it.” Read More


DroneBase nabs $7.5 million in a slight down round to double down on its work in renewable energy – TechCrunch

DroneBase, a Los Angeles-based provider of drone pilots for industrial services companies, has raised $7.5 million during the pandemic to double down on its work with renewable energy companies.

While chief executive Dan Burton acknowledged that the company was fundraising prior to the pandemic, the industrial lockdown actually accelerated demand for the company’s services.
