Mellow made its ‘smart’ sous vide machine dumb unless you pay a monthly fee

In 2014, Mellow, Inc. released the Mellow for $399, billing it as “the world’s first smart sous-vide machine” — one that promised to automatically weigh and then heat and cool your specified foods for a perfect slow-cooked result, even adjusting that timing mid-cook to match your changing schedule. But now, the company is taking away those smarts from existing owners unless they pay $6 a month, or $48 for an annual subscription.

As SlashGear’s Chris Davies reports, Mellow owners were surprised to find they couldn’t cook a meal this week until they updated the app, only to discover that the app update barred them from using most of the cooker’s previously free “smart” features without paying for the new “Premium Subscription.” Read More

How I turned my summer job counting cars into a smart city company

The genesis of Miovision grew out of a summer job I had, doing traffic counts. Sitting in a chair in the hot sun, I realized this was a process ripe for automation. Automated counts could be more accurate. It’s a process that could scale across cities. And, it offered the opportunity to provide 24/7 traffic data.

That summer job also gave me insight into how important this data is. Cities make decisions, in part, based on traffic data – decisions on zoning and where to build what. Traffic teams also use traffic data to optimize the timing of traffic signals, which can have a significant impact on traffic congestion and safety. Ultimately, traffic data helps shape how cities evolve and function. And, while so many other sectors of the economy are being reshaped by data, a lot of traffic data is still collected the same way it was a generation ago. So, I and my co-founders started Miovision in 2005 to apply proven technologies to give cities and towns the modern tools they needed to more effectively measure, manage and optimize mobility flows. Basically, we’re in the business of helping our customers use data to fix traffic, by offering a new way to do an old thing – better. Read More

Wemo’s new WiFi Smart Plug is smaller, cheaper, and available now

Wemo’s new miniaturized WiFi Smart Plug — which the company announced at CES earlier this year — is now available to actually buy.

The new Wemo WiFi Smart Plug is functionally the same as the previous model, but it’s 45 percent smaller than the old (and now somewhat inaccurately named) Wemo Mini model that preceded it. Like the last version, it supports Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and the Wemo app for your various smart home integrations.

The new plug is actually a fraction of a inch taller than the Wemo Mini, but it makes up for that by being far less wide than the old model. The WiFi Smart Plug now takes up just slightly more space than a three-prong plug, which should make it easier to discreetly fit into your home. Read More

Best Buy sale knocks $100 off two Nest Hub Max smart displays

The Nest Hub Max is one of our favorite smart displays and it earned a score of 86 when we reviewed it. It’s more versatile than Google’s smaller smart displays as its 10-inch screen is great for watching videos and viewing photos, and it also comes with a video camera.

That extra hardware feature lets you video chat with friends and family, and it also lets the Hub Max act as a security camera for your home. Instead of using a separate Nest Cam, the video camera on the Hub Max can watch over your home when you’re away and you can use the companion mobile app to watch the video feed whenever you want. While there’s no physical camera shutter, you can electronically disable the camera and microphone with a swipe on the screen. Read More

You may not know you need a smart jump rope but the SmartRope will make you see

TLDR: The SmartRope is what happens when even your jump rope connects to the web — and it’s all about your health…with some random coolness as well.

When your grandmother picked up a jump rope and went out to go play in the yard last century, you have to think she probably didn’t expect that one day, her favorite toy would be part of a technology-driven workout regimen governed by linked devices all over the world.

Of course, few saw the internet coming — and just as few would have thought that a few feet of rope might be electronically talking to a connected world. But that’s basically the origin of the SmartRope, the LED-embedded jump rope created by Tangram Factory. Right now, it’s available so only $79.95 from TNW Deals. Read More

Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Band 5 is missing one of its best features for its global release

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 is the latest in the company’s series of overwhelmingly popular fitness trackers that gives you a wrist based companion to monitor your health for a remarkably low price.

This latest generation fitness tracker from Xiaomi is a remarkable piece of tech for the price, but yet again I’m let down by the company’s choice to not include some of its best features for its global release.

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Band 5 earlier this year in China, where the fitness tracker sported some technology that’s capable of competing with the very best from Samsung, Fitbit and more. Read More

Lenovo Smart Clock Deal: $30 Off Our Fave Nightstand Display

We’re fans of smart displays here on the WIRED Gear team. They let you watch videos or news clips, walk step by step through recipes, display photos, play music, or ask it questions with different sized screens to meet your needs. Lenovo’s Smart Clock (which we rated a 7/10) is our favorite for the bedroom.

The Smart Clock typically sells for $80, which is already on the lower end of the price point for smart displays, and right now it’s on sale for $50 at Best Buy and Walmart.

If you’ve been considering it, it’s a good time to buy. It’s a good first smart display, too, if you aren’t sure how many screens you want to add to your life. Read More
