RBG’s personal trainer honors her with three push-ups in front of her casket

The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has left many Americans mourning. The “Notorious R.B.G.,” as the internet lovingly referred to her, was known for many things, one of them being her exercise routine.  Even as an octogenarian, Ginsburg kept up her routine with the help of personal trainer Bryant Johnson. The two began working together in 1999 after her first bout of cancer, according to USA Today. Ginsburg even continued her routine after receiving radiation last summer. During her memorial service Friday, Johnson honored R.B.G. by doing three push-ups in front of her casket at the U.S. Capitol: The poignant gesture quickly became viral online, with some people riffing on the moment: Ruth Bader Ginsburg was always beating that guy at pushups. Finally, he had a chance to turn the tables. — Sridhar Ramesh (@RadishHarmers) September 25, 2020 Others found it quite moving: I have never cried over push ups before…but that streak is broken — 🏳️‍🌈freedom of peach 🍑 (@demwitted) September 25, 2020 Some even conjectured that Johnson and Ginsburg planned the homage: I hope it is an inside joke. I hope he told her, “I’ll do pushups at your funeral,” and I hope he’s paying off the bet. I hope she sees, and is laughing. This is lovely. — Sarah Hart (@sarahhart27) September 25, 2020 This so something they prob talked about doing lol — 💋 Shakira (@Borntempting) September 25, 2020 While performing three push-ups is an unconventional way to honor someone, it’s safe to…Continue readingRBG’s personal trainer honors her with three push-ups in front of her casket

‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ is still fresh, 30 years later

By Alexis Nedd2020-09-25 11:00:00 UTC The 2020 fall television season has come through with a bounty of new shows and returning favorites, but sometimes novelty isn’t what the discerning TV watcher is after. That impulse to rewatch old favorites or engage in nostalgia is what drives streaming services to compete for comfort binge classics like The Office and Friends — but if I see another article about either of those shows I will snip my router’s power cord and move to the South Pole.  HBO Max debuted earlier this year with a massive catalogue of shows that haven’t popped up for streaming in a while. One of these is The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the early-to-mid-’90s sitcom that launched Will Smith’s acting career and takes home the forever award for catchiest theme song of all time. With news that the surviving cast of Fresh Prince have shot a 30-year anniversary reunion special, as well as Peacock’s recent two-season pickup for the show’s dramatic reboot Bel-Air, it’s the perfect time to take a moment, sit right there, and remember why we fell in love with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.  It’s the perfect time to take a moment, sit right there, and remember…Continue reading‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ is still fresh, 30 years later

Stephen Colbert warns voters not to be fooled by Trump’s attempts to undermine the election

“You really don’t want to hear the words ‘radical’ or ‘bypass’ connected to your heart or your democracy,” quipped Late Night host Stephen Colbert on Thursday. President Donald Trump is gearing up for the upcoming election by laying the groundwork to contest the result, with his campaign considering asking legislators to ignore states’ popular vote and select electors who are loyal to Trump. The reasoning legislators would give, apparently, would be that they didn’t believe the result was what people really wanted. “Trump’s like America’s gaslighting boyfriend,” said Colbert. “‘Pennsylvania, sweetie, you’re confused. You’re so emotional, I think you filled out all these ballots and forgot to put my name in. Let’s throw these away and watch a movie on Netflix, okay? You get to pick — it’s Goodfellas.’” Trump even publicly refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power after the election. Instead, he ominously stated that “we’re gonna have to see what happens.” “Of course, refusing a peaceful transition implies a violent transition, and I don’t want that,” said Colbert. “I majored in theatre. The only fighting experience I have is stage combat.” Still, Colbert urged voters not to get disheartened and to still turn out to cast their ballot. “What Trump really wants to do is undermine your faith in the election so you go, ‘Ah, what’s the point of voting?’” said Colbert. “The point is: you vote, he goes. Regardless of what he tries.” Source linkContinue readingStephen Colbert warns voters not to be fooled by Trump’s attempts to undermine the election

Amazon quietly announces major expansion to neighborhood surveillance networks

Blink and you’ve missed it.  Amazon, the powerhouse behind the Ring security camera network, is coming for your community. On Monday, the surveillance juggernaut announced a major expansion to its smart neighborhood effort dubbed Sidewalk. Notably, Amazon failed to highlight one crucial detailed specified in the accompanying white paper: If you already own one of 20 existing Amazon products, you’ll automatically be participating unless you actively opt out. Launching later this year (if all goes according to plan), Sidewalk “[extends] the low-bandwidth working range of [Amazon] devices, and help[s] devices stay online and up-to-date even if they are outside the range of home Wi-Fi.” In other words, Amazon’s line of surveillance tech (think Ring Floodlight Cams and Ring Spotlight Cams) will help connect itself — well past the reaches of a typical home’s WiFi.  “Customers with a Sidewalk gateway are able to contribute a small portion of their internet bandwidth,” explains the Sidewalk privacy and security white paper, “which is pooled together to create a network that benefits all Sidewalk-enabled devices in a community.” Contained within the white paper is that important fact: Many existing Amazon devices will automatically provide bandwidth for Amazon’s private network unless owners actively prevent them from doing so.  “When customers first turn on a new Sidewalk gateway device, they will be asked whether they want to join the network,” explains the white paper. “For customers with existing devices that are Sidewalk capable, an over-the-air (OTA) update will connect them to the network—no action is needed.”…Continue readingAmazon quietly announces major expansion to neighborhood surveillance networks

Tesla is first car compatible with Amazon’s Ring Car Connect

Tesla owners already have Sentry Mode for car security. But for extra protection, they can buy a $200 device from Amazon’s Ring.  Announced Thursday at an online Amazon event, Ring Car Connect sends car owners alerts about activity near their vehicle. It can also share footage from outside the vehicle, and let car owners know if their doors are locked.  Ring Car Connect ($199) works with the Tesla Model 3, X, S, and Y, and requires plugging a small device into the car. Other car makers can add Ring Car Connect compatibility in the future.  Tesla’s Sentry Mode already comes in every Tesla vehicle for no additional cost. It can record footage of what’s happening outside of the vehicle when it’s parked. Sentry Mode also sets off an alarm if someone gets a little too close to the car while it’s locked. Normally, Tesla owners can only see footage from their car’s eight cameras on the dashboard touchscreen. With Ring Car Connect, they’ll be able to see it in the Ring app. Some Tesla owners store Sentry Mode videos on a device plugged into their car so they can view it later on a computer. The Ring integration would let drivers skip that step. New options for car security. Image: amazon / screengrab  Amazon also unveiled the Ring Car Alarm ($59.99), which plugs into an OBD port (usually located near the driver’s seat) and sends a text alert if your car starts moving, is hit, or someone breaks in. It…Continue readingTesla is first car compatible with Amazon’s Ring Car Connect

Spotify, Epic join coalition to change Apple’s App Store practices

A number of companies have formed a non-profit organization with the goal of forcing Apple to change its App Store practices.  The founding members include Spotify and Epic Games — both of which have been very vocal about Apple’s “unfair” App Store fees and other issues — as well as a number of other companies, including Basecamp, Blix, Blockchain.com, Deezer, and ProtonMail.  Called the Coalition for App Fairness, the group argues that Apple’s 15-30 percent fee from each App Store purchase is too high, and that its App Store practices are “anti-competitive,” and offer “no consumer freedom.” The coalition has 13 founding members. Image: Coalition for app fairness “Apple uses its control of the iOS operating system to favor itself by controlling the products and features that are available to consumers,” states the text on the Coalition’s website. Several examples are offered; one “case study” claims that “Apple has manipulated its rules and policies to disadvantage Tile, a popular Bluetooth finding hardware and app developer, in favor of its competing Find My App.” As for Apple’s App Store fees, the Coalition claims that “no other transaction fee — in any industry — comes close.” The Coalition has also laid down 10 App Store Principles it sees as crucial for the App Store to become fairer towards developers. These include not requiring developers to use one app store exclusively, giving them access to the same interfaces and info as the app store owners give its own developers, and forbidding app store…Continue readingSpotify, Epic join coalition to change Apple’s App Store practices

When will Apple launch the iPhone 12? Here’s our best guess.

September has come and (almost) gone, and while Apple did have an event this month, the company did not launch new iPhones as it typically does.  Officially, there’s no word on when the iPhone 12 (all four of them) will launch. We know that Apple has had to postpone the launch due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with the holiday season coming up, the company likely doesn’t want to wait very long. So, what’s the most probable date for the iPhone 12? Judging by several recent reports, it’s Oct. 13.  Leaker of smartphone things Jon Prosser said his sources told him the launch is happening on Oct. 13, with pre-orders starting on Oct. 16, and in-store availability on Oct. 23. In August, Prosser said the iPhone 12 event is happening sometime between Oct. 12–18, though he also said that iPhone 12 Pro devices will be available for pre-order and shipping in November.  Both AppleInsider and MacRumors agree with the Oct. 13 launch date, citing their own sources.  It’s also worth noting that Apple often announces new products on Tuesdays, and it typically did have October events following the September event, so the Oct. 13 date fits the bill nicely.  Apple is rumored to launch four new iPhones at the event: the “regular” 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models, and the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro variants. The phones are likely to have Apple’s new A14 chip, 5G connectivity, OLED displays, and a new design, reminiscent of the iPad Pro. …Continue readingWhen will Apple launch the iPhone 12?
